Iran protests – Ministry confirms arrest of Austrians

Date:

The Foreign Ministry in Vienna confirmed on Thursday that an Austrian has been arrested during the protests in Iran. However, representatives of the State Department said he was charged with a crime unrelated to the demonstrations.

“As in all cases of detention of Austrian nationals abroad, we will make full use of our consular protection rights to support the man,” the department’s press spokeswoman said. The semi-official Iranian news agency Fars reported on Wednesday that 14 foreigners were detained. Among them is an Austrian.

More than 240 dead
More than 240 people have been killed in ongoing protests in Iran. This is reported by human rights activists. The US human rights organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that 32 minors and 28 security forces were among the dead. In addition, more than 12,000 protesters have been arrested.

Iran blames foreign troops such as the US, Israel and European countries for the protests. The trigger was the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Zhina “Masha” Amini, who had been arrested by the vice squad for allegedly wearing a ill-fitting headscarf.
