Several people were injured in a major fire in an industrial area near Milan on Wednesday. According to the fire service, flames broke out in the San Giuliano Milanese suburb in the morning. The injured were employees of local companies, several Italian media reported. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.
The situation is complex because hazardous materials and toxic substances are stored at the site of the fire, a firefighter told Rainnews24 television channel. Meanwhile, about 100 emergency services were on the scene, including units from the nearby Milan Linate airport.
An explosion was reportedly heard when the fire broke out. Photos from the fire service showed that thick, black smoke from the industrial estate was rising into the air, which was clearly visible from afar. Firefighters used heavy equipment to gain access to the site.
Hazardous material in case of fire
According to the fire service, a company that works with plastic and the chemical company NitrolChimica were affected. According to the regional environmental service Arpa, the latter processes hazardous waste. A specialist air pollution and chemical risk group was also deployed, Arpa said.
The municipality of San Giuliano Milanese called on its residents to keep the windows closed and not to go to the crime scene.
