The aim is to draw attention to climate change and “set an example”: the Dutch city of Haarlem will ban advertising for meat and meat dishes in public spaces from 2024. Instead, the residents of the 160,000-citizen city should be made aware of healthy alternatives.
“Of course everyone can continue to do what they want in their own kitchen,” says city politician Ziggy Klazes, initiator of the initiative. But in public they want to send a signal that meat consumption is a cause of climate change and point to alternatives.
No more advertising for cars and petrol either
But not only sausages, hamburgers and the like may no longer be advertised. Holiday flights, fossil fuels or cars that run on fossil fuels may no longer be publicly advertised in Haarlem. Critics feel patronized, climate activists can be happy with the initiative.
It remains to be seen whether simply banning advertising will lead to a change towards a more climate-friendly way of life. In any case, the city wants to launch further initiatives to make climate and environmental protection more attractive for its residents.
