Sadly, cruel crimes are not uncommon in Mexico, but the most recent horror act is extremely brutal, even by Mexican standards. Eight people, including four children, were shot dead in an apartment building in the central Mexican city of Tultepec. The victims are said to be members of the same family.
The background to the crime on Monday morning (local time) was initially unclear. The Attorney General of the State of Mexico announced on Twitter that an investigation is underway. So the dead were six women and two men.
Neighbors initially thought the shots were fireworks
Seven of them died on the spot, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries in hospital. According to media reports, neighbors heard the shots but initially thought the noise was fireworks. Pyrotechnics are made by many families in Tultepec, about 40 kilometers north of Mexico City.
94 homicides a day in Mexico
Mexico recorded an average of 94 homicides per day – more than 34,000 in total – last year. In Germany, whose population is about two-thirds that of Mexico, there were 257 homicides in 2021. Nearly 100,000 people are also said to have disappeared in Mexico. About 98 percent of crimes in the North American country remain unsolved.
