The trade unions ELA, LAB and Steilas announced a strike in the non-university Basque public education on November 30 and December 14, rejecting the draft law on education and in favor of a “public, Euskaldun and private” school.
As the conveners in Bilbao pointed out, the quoted draft is “far from overcoming the current educational model, but perpetuates it”.
The nationalist trade unions, which make up the majority in the sector, have demanded that the future law should center on the public school, that it prohibits the consultation centers from charging fees, that it guarantees that the authority to determine the Basque curriculum belong to Euskadi and that it establishes a learning model based on immersion in Basque.
