St. Stephen’s Cathedral aspires to the completion of the restoration – a “crown” local inspection in the free heights of the tower!
“The good God sees everything and has held his protective hand over us on earth for a little eternity,” laughs stonemason veteran Christoph Getzner mildly as we jerk up into the construction cage. “Our South Tower is 137 meters high, so we are closer to the sky. It is now finished and we will soon be able to dismantle the scaffolding,” philosophizes Getzner, who has been balancing for 30 years between the wondrous sandstone formations with apprentices, journeymen and master craftsmen, endowing them with earthly splendor with his stone carving skills.
The 61-year-old joins a long generation of stonemason ancestors who used the hammer before him. The fact that he does his work dressed in pink is due to a moving episode.
In 1889, the company founder Josef Manner I registered the Viennese monument as a trademark and since then the “Steffl” has been printed on every package of slices. “As a thank you, we have been covering the wage costs of a stonemason for 45 years,” said Manner board member Andreas Kutil at the local inspectorate “Vergeltsgott” with master builder Wolfgang Zehetner.
