The price of diesel surpasses that of petrol for the first time in years, reaching a new all-time high, while petrol remains just 0.3% below the record.

The rise in energy prices has resulted in both car fuels and electricity closing the month of March at an all-time high, a situation that has prompted the Spanish government exceptional measures to mitigate the impact on consumers.

Over the past week, both petrol and diesel have resumed their upward trend after the truce they signed a few days ago with the drop in oil prices, and while the former of them marked its second highest price in history, diesel a new entry.

As for electricity, despite the price drop in the wholesale market in the second half of March, the month ended with an average price of 283 euros per megawatt hour (€/MWh), the highest in history for December last year.

Diesel at 1,837 euros per liter and gasoline 1,818 euros

In the current context marked by the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both petrol and diesel are among the most affected commodities, continuously breaking records in recent weeks.

According to data from the European Union (EU) oil bulletin released this Thursday, which includes the average price registered at more than 11,400 Spanish gas stations between March 22 and 28, 95-octane petrol recorded an average price of 1,818 euros. per liter and diesel remained at 1,837 euros.

After this increase, the price of diesel has surpassed that of petrol for the first time in years and has reached a new all-time high, while petrol remains only 0.3% below the record.

With these prices, filling an average 55 liter tank with both petrol and diesel is more than 100 euros, which amounts to paying about 35 euros more than at the beginning of 2021 if petrol is used, and 42 euros more if used for diesel. chosen.

Six of the eight highest prizes in history

However, wholesale electricity ended Thursday as the most expensive month in history, with an average price of €283.3/MWh. This value exceeds the €239.22/MWh recorded in December, the most expensive month to date, and almost triples the 2021 average price (€111.4/MWh).

Last month, electricity set a new record at €544.98/MWh on March 8, registering six of the eight highest prices in history.

Moreover, on no day did it drop below the €200/MWh mark and exceed €300/MWh eight times, all between 3 and 10 March, when the military conflict entered its most conflictual phase.

In that sense, the record levels in March will electricity bill this month in the most expensive in history for an average consumer covered by the regulated tariff or PVPC, after crossing a price of 120 euros.
