The far-right leader was sworn in as prime minister of Italy this morning. Tomorrow, the transfer of power will take place with the outgoing Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and then Meloni will chair the Council of Ministers for the first time.

The leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Melonicwas sworn in this morning to the position of new prime ministerthe first woman to hold that position in the country’s history, in a ceremony presided over by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

“I swear to be loyal to the Republic, loyal to the Constitution and laws, and to exercise my mandate and my functions in the exclusive interest of the nation,” he said before the head of state, at the Hall of the Festivities or the Roman Palace of the Quirinal.

After signing the decree of his appointment, his two vice presidents have done the same, Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, respective exponents of the far-right League and the conservative Forza Italia.

This government, number 68 in nearly eight decades of post-World War II democracy, is the most sharp right that is remembered, led by the Brothers of Italy, the heir of the post-fascist Italian Social Movement.

For example, it will have a Minister for Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Roccella, from FdI, a champion of the ‘pro-life’ movements and a battering ram against the LGBT movement.

This Sunday the transfer of powers with the outgoing Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and then Meloni will for the first time council of ministers.

Then, predictably early next week, inauguration of the executive branch in the two seats of Parliament, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, a formalism as the right has an absolute majority.

The leaders of the European institutions congratulated Giorgia Meloni after she became the new Prime Minister and asked her to “work together constructively” and to “work together” to “meet the challenges of the EU”.
