Despite EU protection, shy golden jackals are in the crosshairs in Lower Austria

There are no exact figures, but scientists agree: the intelligent golden jackals have already reached Norway, but in this country they are hunted despite EU protection. The “Krone” asked nature doyen Kurt Kotrschal why this is so and why the dog’s relatives are harmless.

Many people only know them from documentation about their original homeland in Africa or Southeast Europe. They are in fact the ‘winners of global warming’. A specimen has now been spotted in Northern Norway, says wildlife and wolf expert Kurt Kotrschal. The animals that look like wolves actually have only one thing in common: they are – even better – ‘masters of hiding’.
