For anyone who wants to pop the champagne corks outside on New Year’s Eve, the prospects are not particularly favorable: a cold front brings rain and snowfall just in time for the New Year.
The year 2023 is slowly but surely coming to an end. However, according to the UBIMET forecast, the outlook for New Year’s Eve is quite mixed, with a cold front bringing rain and snow to many places. After all, it remains quite mild with temperatures ranging from 0 to plus 8 degrees while the Pummerin rings.
During the day on New Year’s Eve it is still relatively quiet, especially in the mountains and hills, with occasional sun. In the lowlands, however, fog and high fog appear to be very persistent. The maximum values on the last day of the year vary accordingly: 2 degrees in the permanently gray and some shady valleys and up to 12 degrees in the foehn-soaked Montafon and southeastern Styria.
In the afternoon and evening it will be cloudy in the west and south with the cold front from COSTA and it will start to rain from Vorarlberg to Carinthia. The snowfall limit is then usually between 900 and 1300 meters.
A cold front brings rain and snow
On New Year’s Eve, dense cloud will gradually cover all of Austria, meaning there will be no starry sky fireworks in most of the country this year.
As the evening progresses, rain and snowfall will spread further east, with the snowfall line dropping to 1000 to 700 meters. Rain is likely to reach the eastern lowlands around midnight; the corks will probably remain dry in Burgenland and southeastern Styria, but also in Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland.
Especially in the direction of the Rhine Valley, there is a real chance that the rockets will share the night sky with the stars and the moon. The thermometers show between 0 degrees in the higher Alpine valleys and plus 8 degrees in the southeast at midnight.
The weather remains far too mild for the time of year. A look at the meteorological history books for particularly high or low temperatures shows the enormous range possible on one of the most important nights of the year in this country.
