White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced in a statement on Saturday that Biden will receive Trump in the Oval Office next Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Washington (5 p.m. in the Basque Country).
Trump, who already ruled the country between 2017 and 2021, won the elections last Tuesday to the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over Biden as her party’s nominee last July.
In the absence of oversight in the state of Arizona, the last to be awarded, Trump won 301 votes electoral votes, 31 more than the 270 needed to win the presidency, compared to the 226 Harris collected.
In an address to the nation on Thursday, Biden pledged to provide one “peaceful and orderly transition” to hand power to Trump and tried to console Democrats by assuring them that “America is doing well.”
Biden has not confirmed whether he will attend the meeting in person. Trump’s inauguration on January 20 2025, but he hinted he might do so: “I will keep my promises and uphold the Constitution on January 20; we will have a peaceful transition of power in the United States,” he said.
When Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden, he refused to accept the outcome and became the first president in 150 years not to attend his successor’s inauguration.
