Government sworn in – “Great Day for Rights” – Orban congratulates Meloni

Date:

The swearing in of the new Italian government led by the right-wing populist Giorgia Meloni received applause from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has maintained friendly relations with the leader of the right-wing party Fratelli d’Italia (FdI – Brothers of Italy) for years . “I congratulate Giorgia Meloni on forming her government. Today is a big day for the European right,” Orban tweeted.

The Hungarian Prime Minister posted a photo showing the two in a good mood (see below). Meloni also received congratulations from Marine Le Pen, head of the French Rassemblement National (RN). “I wish Giorgia Meloni, the new Prime Minister of Italy, and Matteo Salvini, the Deputy Prime Minister, every success. All over Europe, patriots are coming to power and with them the Europe of the Nations that we hope for,” Le Pen emphasized.

Biden also congratulates
Other top politicians also congratulated Meloni, but of course emphasized other aspects. Italy is an important NATO ally and close partner “as our countries face common global challenges,” US President Joe Biden said on Saturday. He looks forward to joining Italy in the G7 to “continue support for Ukraine, hold Russia accountable for its aggression, ensure respect for human rights and democratic values, and build sustainable economic growth.”

Congratulations also came from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “I wish the new government that it can successfully face all the challenges of the present. I look forward to continued fruitful cooperation to ensure peace and prosperity in Ukraine, Italy and the world!” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter.

Czech government wants close cooperation
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala sees opportunities for close cooperation with Meloni. “I know your position on European integration and I believe that good cooperation is possible,” Fiala said in an interview with the daily newspaper “La Stampa”. The Czech Republic will hold the presidency of the European Union for these six months.

The congratulations to Meloni also came from Brussels. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated Meloni as “the first woman to hold this position”. “I am ready and happy to work constructively with the new Italian government and find answers to the challenges we face,” von der Leyen tweeted.

“Europe faces enormous challenges. Europe needs Italy. Together we will overcome all difficulties. Well done!” wrote the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, in a tweet in Italian.

First meeting with Macron
As the first foreign politician, Meloni, in her role as Italy’s new prime minister, will meet French President Emmanuel Macron, who is expected in Rome on Sunday. He will meet the Pope on Tuesday. Francis has hosted the French president twice since he took office in 2017, most recently in late November 2021. Macron is traveling to Rome for the annual gathering of the grassroots Catholic community of Sant’Egidio.
