Damage still unclear – activists throw mashed potatoes at Monet’s painting

Date:

Two activists from the “Last Generation” climate protection protest group attacked a valuable painting by French impressionist Claude Monet at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam.

A photo from Monet’s (1889-1891) “Les Meules” series was splashed with a viscous mass, museum spokeswoman Carolin Stranz reported Sunday. It remains to be determined whether and what damage there was to the photo, Stranz said.

The two also stuck to the wall where the painting hangs. A total of four people were involved in the operation. The protest group posted a video of the attack on the painting on Twitter, saying that mashed potatoes had been thrown at the painting. “Sunflowers” attacked too
Just over a week ago, environmentalists threw tomato soup at the painting “Sunflowers” (1888) by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh at the National Gallery in London. The frame was slightly damaged.

The photo from the “Haystacks” series hangs in the permanent exhibition of the Museum Barberini from the collection of the donor and multi-billionaire Hasso Plattner. The police only confirmed an operation in the museum.
