‘Not the right thing’ – Johnson waives candidacy for prime minister

Date:

British ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson will no longer run for office. Although he has the necessary support in the Conservative Tory faction, he decided to oppose it, the politician said on Sunday evening. That leaves only ex-Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and Tory Speaker Penny Mordaunt in the running to replace hapless Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The candidacy period for the successor ends on Monday afternoon. However, only those who can claim the support of 100 MPs from the Tory parliamentary group have a chance to become prime minister. More than 140 MPs have already spoken out for favored ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, according to the BBC. Johnson would also have taken the hurdle of 100 supporters on Sunday. Mordaunt had had little chance of getting the necessary number of signatures. However, after Johnson’s departure, the cards could be shuffled again.

If at least two applicants pass the hurdle, the group votes between them first. Then the party members have to speak. If Sunak is the only one with the necessary support, he could be the next prime minister on Monday. Outgoing Prime Minister Truss announced her resignation on Thursday after six unprecedentedly chaotic weeks in office under pressure from her party. She defeated Sunak, who was previously the favorite of Tory MPs, in a Tory primary in the summer.
