France says goodbye to Lola, the murdered girl who appeared in a suitcase

Date:

The horrific murder of this teen has shocked the entire country and sparked great controversy as the far right has sought to exploit the crime for political ends.

Ten days after her murder in Paris, France last said goodbye to Lola Daviet, the 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a suitcase in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lived with her family. The horrific murder of this teenager in the French capital has shocked the entire country and has sparked widespread controversy as the far right has sought to exploit the crime for political ends.

The funeral, celebrated by the Bishop of Arras, Olivier Leborgne, took place at the church of Saint-Omer in Lillers, a town of 10,000 inhabitants in Pas-de-Calais (Northern France), where Lola’s mother was born. The girl’s white coffin, decorated with white flowers, entered the church, followed by her parents, siblings, relatives and friends. The Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, attended the funeral at the family’s invitation. The residents of rue Manin, the street where Lola and her family lived in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, and friends of the Pas-de-Calais campsite where they spent the summer, also moved to Lilliers.

“Lola, 12 years old. Lola left too early, under absolutely unbearable conditions,” Bishop Leborgne said at the beginning of the Mass. The family and the bishop wanted the ceremony, which lasted an hour, to be “simple and sober”, far from the political controversies of recent days.

“Today nothing stops our tears. Until recently we saw you laughing, smiling, dancing, without worrying about anything, like a child your age. You leave a great void around us. Your departure leaves us devastated and destroys us. We will certainly do our best to honor your memory, my little princess. We will take care of each other. We love you, my Lola,” the teen’s aunt said excitedly during the religious ceremony.

«My Lola, my adored sister. I hope you hear me from up there,” said Thibault, one of the murdered girl’s older brothers, between sobs and in a voice broken by emotion. been to you in your life. We’re going to miss you. I love you, sister,” he added excitedly.

“It’s time to say goodbye, but we’ll see you again,” the Bishop of Arras concluded the mass. Those unable to attend the church due to space constraints followed the religious ceremony through loudspeakers and were later able to enter to view the coffin, lay flowers and say goodbye.

The exit of the church of the coffin was accompanied by the song “La Goffa Lolita” by the group La Petite Culotte. The cheerful music of this teenage song gave way to a long silence, with which the inhabitants of Lillers said goodbye to little Lola. At the parents’ request, the burial took place in strict family privacy in Lillers Cemetery, the same cemetery where the remains of his maternal grandparents rest.

Dahbia B., the prime suspect in the crime, is an undocumented Algerian immigrant. He had legally entered France as a student in 2016, but his visa had expired. The alleged killer, 24, had been ordered to leave French territory since August for not having the papers in order, but she ignored it.

This fact infuriated the far right in France, which denounced the government’s “laxity” on migration and believed that the executive branch is partially responsible for this crime. Far-right Éric Zemmour described Lola’s murder as “francocide”, implying that Lola was murdered by a foreigner because she was French.

The alleged killer has been charged with the crimes of “murdering a minor under the age of 15”, “rape committed with torture and barbarity” and “hiding a corpse”, and is currently in prison. She will be subject to a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether she can be tried or not. If she is eventually tried, she could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
