Simon Cowell on the ‘difficult’ decision to cancel BGT during the Covid pandemic

(from left to right) Judges David Williams, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alisha Dixon arrive at the London Palladium in front of the audience of Britain’s Got Talent.

Simon Cowell explained the “difficult decision” to weed out last year’s British talent amid the Covid pandemic. The reality TV chief said he was “nervous” about filming the show with the new version being launched in the country, and the series ended a few weeks before audiences began.

However, Cowell will still team up with judges Amanda Holden, Alisha Dixon and David Williams and host Ant & Dec when the show returns this weekend.

He said, “As much as I didn’t want to make a bid last year we couldn’t do it at this point, it would be practically impossible. We had to stop at the last minute, it was a tough decision, but it was the right one.”

“I think in the background, when we all got back together, I think we realized how happy we were to do the show. We missed it, we do well together.”

He added, “It was tough, but I have to be honest, because of what was happening when the new version came out, I was really nervous about it. We were out of the audience for two or three weeks and I was just thinking, ‘We can’t do this, the risk is too high for me’. everyone.”

“So it was tough, but I knew he was right, because it wasn’t like the show’s coming back at all. We always knew he’d come back this year and come back fast, and that’s what happened.

“So I missed it, but I had no other choice. I hope this break, I haven’t been on the air in a year, and viewers will love it more, and I hope they will miss it.”

Coyle added that he was happy to have a relationship with live audiences again, saying, “It’s the best feeling. You don’t realize how important your audience is until you get them. Then their comeback was incredible.”

“It’s really hard to do this show without an audience. We always say they’re the fifth judges, they really are because we often base our decision on the audience. Say no.

“So they really have a lot of power in this show. It looks and feels something special and the audience’s reaction to the action is when they realize they see something special. That is the best feeling.”

Britain’s Got Talent returns on ITV on Saturday 16th April at 8pm.
