Government statement – Mattle called for ‘restart’ with emphasis on energy

Date:

The new Tyrolean governor is called Anton Mattle. The 59-year-old former state councilor and ÖVP chairman and his government team from the People’s Party and SPÖ received 21 out of 36 possible votes on Tuesday at the constituent meeting of the state parliament – this corresponds to the black-red majority. In his first speech to the state legislature, Mattle conjured up a “new start” and emphasized the energy issue and fighting the crisis.

Given the “crossroads of crises” and major changes, it’s important to “define a fresh start,” Mattle said. “We need the willingness to look for new solutions and break new ground. We want to renew Tyrol’, the governor explained. Mattle saw energy as an important part of the renewal. To a large extent one has to make do with “imported inflation” or price increases. “We need to support companies in a targeted way, prevent poverty and maintain the competitiveness of our economy,” said the head of state.

From hydropower to solar energy
You need to save energy and expand energy production at the same time. For example, Mattle referred to the “consistent expansion” of hydropower enshrined in the government program with the SPÖ and the installation of five million square feet of photovoltaic systems in the state — including in large parking lots. You need to “fight the causes, not just treat the symptoms”.

In terms of content, the governor has also settled essential, already known cornerstones of the coalition agreement. The much-cited “active basic and land policy” includes, for example, the mandatory contractual spatial planning and the building land tax. It is important to make life affordable for Tyroleans.

Transit: Neighbors have a duty
In the area of transit/traffic, he campaigned, inter alia, for the extension of the access roads to the Brenner base tunnel and the creation of a “lock system”. He warned neighbors to do their part to curb the excessive transit traffic. In addition, Mattle referred to the agreed legal right to childcare. A “paradigm shift” is underway in this area. Massive investment in nursing education would also be on the black and red agenda.

Goal: Decrease the conservation status of the wolf
And Mattle didn’t forget about the long-running “wolf” either: In the future, killing the great carnivore should be by decree rather than decision. Tyrol also wants to work at European level to lower the protection status of wolves.

shook hands with the opposition
“ÖVP and SPÖ have agreed on a progressive, sustainable and social partnership,” Mattle said, because, “Standing still means going backwards.” A visibly moved governor also thanked his predecessors in office – Alois Partl, Wendelin Weingartner, Herwig van Staa and Günther Platter (all ÖVP). Among them, Tyrol has developed “excellently”. In addition, Mattle has given the opposition a “hand for cooperation”. establishment and in politics”.

Replace black and green
Mattle succeeds Platter, who ruled Tyrol for more than 14 years. Black-Red replaces the previous black-green state government that has been in power since 2013. Mattle’s first deputy is SPÖ leader Georg Dornauer, who led the Social Democrats back into government after nearly a decade. The ÖVP had suffered a painful defeat in the September 25 state elections, losing more than nine percentage points and finishing with almost 35 percent. However, a predicted complete crash of less than 30 percent did not materialize. The SPÖ won only slightly, losing second place to the FPÖ.
