Escape from regime? – Dead in landing gear: flights to Iran cancelled

Date:

For weeks, the ever-increasing protests in Iran have been violently crushed by the government. With the increasing persecution of protesters, some are trying to get out of the country – and often in a very dangerous way. After a body has been found in the landing gear of a Lufthansa plane, the airline reacts – canceling flights to Tehran without further ado. Meanwhile, the demonstrations in Iran are getting bigger and bigger.

Two Lufthansa flights and one of Austrian Airlines’ subsidiaries were specifically affected. The group is controlling its flights to the Iranian capital, a company spokeswoman in Frankfurt said. A decision on the resumption of connections is expected in the afternoon. A male body was found on Thursday in an Airbus A340 that had arrived from Tehran.

The identity of the man is not yet known. The investigation into the case was taken over by the police headquarters in Frankfurt, which initially did not provide any details. According to the tracking service Flightradar24, the direct flight LH601 Tehran – Frankfurt lasted almost five hours on Thursday and landed in Frankfurt at 5.18 am.

At least eight dead in 24 hours
Most recently, the population’s freedom protests have seen an additional influx. According to Iran’s ISNA news agency, “nearly 10,000 people” flocked to the grave of Mahsa Amini, whose death sparked the protest on Wednesday alone. At least eight people were killed within 24 hours, according to human rights organization Amnesty International.

Unusual layoff
The excessive force against the protesters even forced the government to intervene. In the southeast of the country, the chief of police of the city of Zahedan was fired. Iranian media said this was the result of an investigation into the violent crackdown on the September 30 protests in the city.

Observers see the unusual layoff as a growing disagreement in the southeastern province. An influential Sunni cleric in Zahedan, Molavi Abdulhamid, also recently criticized the course taken by the political leadership in the Shia majority country. Other local clerics are said to have joined his criticism.
