Experts warn: – 24-hour care is becoming more and more unaffordable

Date:

There are cracks in every nook and cranny in our healthcare system. The workers are overworked and are turning their backs on their jobs or even Austria. If there is no more 24-hour care, there is a risk of collapse.

40,000 people in Austria receive 24-hour care. They relieve some 120,000 family members. The state is making 550 euros per month available for this. Interest groups are now arguing for an increase in this funding.

It is not just about relieving those affected. It’s about maintaining the health care system. “If the 40,000 affected people can no longer be cared for at home, they will have to be admitted to intramural facilities. But there are simply too few places for that,” said spokesman Mario Tasotti.

Informal carers turn their backs on Austria
The demand from the interest groups: an increase in monthly support by 800 to 900 euros. This is the only way to convince nursing staff to work in Austria. Since 2019, 3,000 nurses have turned their backs on the Alpine Republic. According to experts, they prefer to go to countries where they can earn more. Because of course the carers are also affected by the price increases and they have to take care of families at home.

The model is in danger of collapsing due to the inaction of the politicians. “Financing and costs are completely out of balance,” Tasotti says. It would also save the state money: “A 24-hour care costs an average of 3240 euros per month. The state pays 550 euros of this. By comparison, a place in a health care institution costs the federal and state governments between 4,600 and 6,000 euros per month,” Tasotti calculates.
