Meloni chooses Brussels for her first trip as Italian leader

Date:

The far-right president will meet the presidents of the European Commission, the Council and the European Parliament next Thursday in the capitals of the Community institutions

The new Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has decided that her first destination as President will be the capital of the EU institutions, Brussels; where he will travel next Thursday to meet the Presidents of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; of the Council, Charles Michel; and of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. This was confirmed by the teams of senior community officials.

The government of Rome has also indicated that the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party will travel to the Egyptian city of Sharm el Sheikh next week to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP27) and later to the G20 on Bali .

Asked about the controversy of a meeting with an ultra-leader, von der Leyen’s spokesman wanted to emphasize that the European Commission president “of course cooperates with the authorities of all member states” and “does not interfere in the internal political life” of the bloc countries. .

Von der Leyen, his spokesman added, hopes for “good cooperation” with the Italian government on the “challenges of the coming months”, including “difficult” issues, for example energy measures, aid to Ukraine or “proper implementation” of the recovery plan. .

Just this week, Meloni, in his maiden speech to Parliament, suggested that he seeks to negotiate “adjustments” with Brussels in the recovery plan that sets out the milestones and reforms Rome must implement in order to access the community aid created after the pandemic. .
