Marius Mihai Draghici was arrested in Romania in August and later extradited to the United Kingdom thanks to a European arrest warrant.
A 49-year-old Romanian citizen, Marius Mihai Draghici, has been formally charged with the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants whose bodies were found in a lorry in Essex, England, United Kingdom on October 23, 2019.
Draghici was arrested in Romania in August and later extradited to the United Kingdom thanks to a European arrest warrant. He is now in prison in Essex and charged with 39 murders and conspiracy to aid illegal immigration. The case is being tried in the Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court.
Temperatures in the back of the truck reached 38.5 degrees Celsius, despite the migrants paying more than £10,000 each (around £11,650) to travel to England.
The truck came from Zeebrugge in Belgium and arrived by sea in the port of Purfleet in Essex.
