Thomas Schmid’s confession shocked the Republic. Long-standing SPÖ chancellor Franz Vranitzky recalls the days without the internet and chats, his meeting with Sebastian Kurz and the voluntary resignation from power.
Friday afternoon in the “Pfarrwirt” in Grinzing, the oldest inn in Vienna. Normally, Franz Vranitzky completes his appointments in the “Kreisky-Forum” in Armbrustergasse, but that closed on Friday. We find him in the back room, sitting at a round table overlooking the garden and reading the business section of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. On October 4, the long-serving Chancellor of the SPÖ, he turned 85, looking much younger. Black suit, pink and white striped shirt. “I don’t wear a tie,” he explains, almost apologetically, “that’s the way it is these days.” During the conversation, his iPhone rings three times, the grand seigneur of the SPÖ is as active as ever.
