According to the maritime traffic portal and the AFP agency, two ships loaded with grain left Ukrainian ports this Monday morning.
The residents of Kiev woke up this Monday to the sound of new explosions – up to a dozen were heard – which, according to journalists from the AFP agency, took place after 8 a.m. (local time). The mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitali Klitschko has reported that several neighborhoods are without electricity and water. “As a result of the impact on critical infrastructure, part of the capital was cut off from communications. There is no water supply in some areas,” he wrote on his Telegram profile. Other regions, such as Kharkiv or Zaporizhzhya, were also bombed.
What happened has been interpreted as a response to the drone attack on the Russian fleet in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, last weekend, which Moscow blamed on Ukraine and denied the latter. It was after this attack that Russia suspended the agreement to export grain from Ukrainian ports, which was deemed vital to the world’s food supply. Both the UN and the EU called on Sunday for a return to the pact. The head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrell, asked Putin to backtrack on his decision, while the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed his “deep concern” about the situation. However, in the past hour, two ships loaded with grain are said to have left Ukrainian ports this morning, according to the maritime traffic portal and the AFP agency. More than a hundred remain blocked.
Monday’s Russian attacks are the latest in a long list of bombings that have taken place this month. On October 8, an explosion destroyed part of the Kerch Bridge highway, which connects Crimea to mainland Russia, and set off a fire in the section that houses the railway. The infrastructure has not yet been fully restored. This action was met with massive bombing raids on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, and in successive days they continued to destroy energy centers and factories. The country is currently facing an acute electricity shortage.
