The governments of the European Union (EU) and Egypt want to work together more closely in the future to reduce migration across the Mediterranean. These include, for example, search and rescue measures for refugees on land and at sea.
In detail, for example, the purchase of search and rescue equipment should be supported and special training for border personnel will be offered. This was announced by the EU delegation in Cairo on Sunday. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) would also be involved in the new agreement.
EU pays 80 million euros
The EU will support Egypt with a total of €80 million, a spokeswoman for EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said in Brussels on Monday. Of this, 23 million euros this year is earmarked for border security.
Recently, more and more people have come to Europe from Egypt. According to the EU Asylum Authority, most Egyptians who travel to the EU without authorization come to Italy via the Central Mediterranean.
Her main reasons for leaving the country are the poor economic situation and the search for work. Human rights violations would also play a role. “In the short term, economic and human rights factors are likely to remain a push factor for Egyptian migration decisions, so Italy will continue to experience significant irregular migration from Egypt,” said officials of the EU’s asylum authority.
