Fatal traffic accident Monday morning in Vienna-Hietzing: An 83-year-old man came off the road with his car and slammed into the crash barrier with full force. An off-duty police officer witnessed the accident, freed the victim from the car and set the rescue chain in motion. But all the help came too late for the retiree.
The serious accident happened around 11:20 am at Hietzinger Kai. The policewoman drove behind the 83-year-old’s car. She saw the car crash into the guardrail, stopped and called 911.
The officer then freed the pensioner from the vehicle along with a passer-by. Emergency services of the Vienna professional rescue service attended to the victim. “However, he died at the scene of the accident,” police spokeswoman Barbara Gass said.
Cyclist hit by car
Just under two hours earlier, there was a rescue operation after a traffic accident at a roundabout in Simmering. An 81-year-old motorist hit a cyclist with his car. The 47-year-old suffered serious injuries. He was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg by the professional rescue service.
