The question of whether one can steal the body of Christ was clarified on Monday in a curious case at the Salzburg regional court.
“Go get it, Jesus told me,” a 35-year-old Egyptian justified in a Salzburg court on Monday. On September 14, the man marched to the tabernacle in the church of Bergheim and helped himself to the communion wafers. He was surprised by a horrified nun.
“Please don’t take it with you, that’s our Jesus,” she says, speaking against his conscience at the time. However, the trained but unemployed vet was unimpressed and slipped Christ’s body into his coat pocket. The man put the beautiful chalice back.
The Egyptian declared that as a devout Catholic he was entitled to the body of Christ. Pope Francis says no one can forbid him! After a fervent plea, the man put it on paper: “I believe that there can be no property in the body of God!” He was not baptized, but attended church every day — sometimes multiple times, according to the accused.
“It was never about the gold cup for me. If I had wanted to, I would have taken him. The sister could not have prevented that,” said the suspect.
The judge announced an acquittal. The accused thanked her in his own way. “God bless you,” the man tossed her at the end of the trial.
