13-year-old Andre W. from Linz is the hero of the day. On Sunday evening, the student saw two children torturing a bird in the courtyard of a residential complex. The girls allegedly kicked the cub and poured water on it – the parents watched.
Young bird very weak
Saying “What are you doing, stop,” the brave boy intervened and brought the weakened bird to its mother. “The animal was completely soaked and kept opening its beak, but no sound came out. I warmed him up with a towel and tried to keep him awake,” says the mother.
Animal abuse is not an isolated incident
After half an hour, the animal rights activists from the Linz Animal Ambulance arrived and tried to save the young bird’s life. Unfortunately in vain: the abuse was too serious. This is not an isolated case, an animal rights activist from Wales complains: “We let children play football with a young star. He did not survive the abuse, his parents were next to him.”
How to respond correctly
“It is best to take young birds that have fallen from the nest there. If that doesn’t work, please contact experienced animal rights activists,” says Georg Pold of the Linz Animal Ambulance. “The animals cannot survive on their own; they need food and warmth.” His team currently goes out up to twice a day to care for birds that have fallen from the nest.
