Wreaths laid – government commemorates terrorist attack in the city of Vienna

On Wednesday, Austria officially commemorates the victims of the terrorist attack on November 2, 2020. Among others, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) commemorated the four dead at the memorial stone on Desider-Friedmann-Platz in the center of Vienna. with wreath laying. A joint statement said: “Today, as then, our thoughts are with those we lost on the day of the attack.”

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens), Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and the President of the Israelite Religious Association, Oskar Deutsch, were also present at the wreath-laying ceremony. They placed flowers and candles under a large police presence and strong media coverage.

Chancellor and Vice Chancellor condemned the murder as an attempt to divide society. However, this failed, they stand “united against terror and violence and for togetherness and peace”.

On November 2, 2020, an IS sympathizer killed four people and injured 20 people in central Vienna before being shot dead by police. It was the last night before another corona lockdown. The killer opened fire around 8 p.m. near the Bermuda Triangle, a nightlife area in Vienna.

He kills a 21-year-old Austrian on the Fleischmarkt, a 24-year-old German on the Ruprechtsplatz. He shoots a 44-year-old Austrian on Seitenstettengasse and a 39-year-old Austrian on the corner of Rabensteig/Schwedenplatz. A commission of inquiry that had been set up criticized the Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution’s blatant omissions in its handling of the later murderer.

Process started in Vienna
The trial of six suspected supporters of the killer at the Vienna Regional Court (see video above) began on October 18. The defendants denied the central claim that they were aware of the killer’s terrorist plans and that they supported him in doing so. The hearing will continue on 1 December with the questioning of the suspect. All six defendants said they wanted to elaborate on the allegations against them.
