The Serbian armed forces in the border area with Kosovo have been put on increased readiness. Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said the orders came after drones were sighted filming Serbian military installations in the Raska and Merdare region, two towns not far from the Kosovo border.
However, the head of government contradicted media reports that spy drones had been shot down. Such an approach will be considered in the future, the statement said.
Controversy over new license plate requirement
Tensions between Belgrade and Pristina have recently been sparked by the issue of car license plates, which have flared up again and again. On Friday evening, the Kosovar government decided to give Serbs living in northern Kosovo a deadline of April 21, 2023 to exchange their Serbian license plates with Kosovar ones. It is estimated that there are still about 10,000 motor vehicles with Serbian registration plates in the north of Kosovo. The implementation of this scheme has been postponed several times after escalations, some of them violently.
Their owners refuse to exchange their license plates. Belgrade supports this position. Serbia refuses to recognize the independence of its former province of Kosovo, announced in 2008. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic emphasized in a radio interview on Wednesday that the army would do everything it could to protect the Serb population, including those in Kosovo.
