Will there soon be manipulated plants on the fields of Austria? The Commission will present its proposal to relax the rules on Wednesday. However, the resistance is huge.
Nuclear energy and genetic engineering, these two terms are ringing alarm bells in Austria. The EU Commission considers nuclear energy green and worthy of support, but the domestic government has complained. And now there is a great controversy about another problem. Because on Wednesday, Brussels will present the draft for a far-reaching relaxation of the rules for genetic manipulation.
So far, only one GM seed has been approved for cultivation in the EU, but the maize is only grown commercially in Spain and Portugal. There is a ban on the cultivation of manipulated plants in 20 EU countries.
No more labeling required
This could now change. The Commission no longer wants labeling to be mandatory for new, so-called green processes. “That would be a betrayal of the citizens. We have a right to know what’s on our plate,” said Green MEP Sarah Wiener. Environmentalists also warn of a danger to organic farming, the organic fields would be contaminated by neighboring GMO fields. Experts also refer to herbicide-resistant “super weeds” and immune pests.
Proponents of genetic engineering, on the other hand, argue that due to the climate crisis, there is a need for resistant and high-yielding plants. The gene conflict in the EU has only just begun.
