In Spain, a right-wing guard has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for the planned murder of left-wing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The 65-year-old had made his intention known to acquaintances and on the internet and also asked for help.
State television channel RTVE and other media reported this on Tuesday, citing the National Court for Particularly Serious Crimes in Madrid. The guard is said to have been determined to kill leftist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Revenge on dictator’s reburial
The convict wanted to take revenge for the 2018 planned reburial of dictator Francisco Franco, who died in 1975, from the mausoleum “Valle de los Caidos” northwest of Madrid to a normal grave. Franco’s regime was considered fascist and marked by wars. The socialist government was behind the reburial of his body in 2019.
The guard was in possession of several illegal weapons, including sniper rifles and an assault rifle, according to media reports. He is said to be a skilled marksman. He had already been arrested in 2018.
