Italy’s new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, complains that the EU’s foreign policy is inadequate. “There is no such thing as a European foreign policy: in Libya we acted in random order, the same happened in the Ukraine crisis. Instead, we should see Europe wasting time on secondary issues such as gender identity,” Meloni said in an interview with Italian TV journalist Bruno Vespa.
Meloni, 45, who will hold her first meeting with EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday, explained that she sees the EU as a confederation of sovereign states rather than a political union. “My idea of the EU is federal,” said Italy’s new prime minister.
Hopes for a “long adventure” as head of government
The post-fascist said she hopes for a “long adventure” as head of government: “We hope this adventure will be long and exciting. We can only do that if we succeed in providing citizens with answers to their needs.”
Stop rescue ships from landing
Meloni reiterated her plan to prevent rescue ships from landing in Italy. The head of the right-wing party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) said Germany should take responsibility for taking in migrants taken in by German rescue ships. About 1,000 migrants are currently waiting aboard three rescue ships to land in southern Italy.
