The Pentagon of the US Department of Defense fears an intensification of hostilities in eastern Ukraine. “We believe the Russians have decided to focus on Donbass and southern Ukraine. Units previously operating around Kiev and in the north are being formed for new operations in these regions,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday afternoon.
In a conference call with European journalists, Kirby explained that the US assumes that much of the firepower of the Russian armed forces gathered around Ukraine early this year is still available.
Signs of supplies in the Donbass
After strategic targets in Kiev, Chernihiv and other parts of the north were not achieved and the Russians themselves were thrown back in the south near Mykolaiv, they are now setting new priorities in eastern Ukraine. In particular, Kirby spoke of sighted convoys north of the city of Izyum in the Kharkiv region, as well as signs of resupply in the Donbass itself.
“Because Russia is concentrating its firepower in a smaller area, there is the potential to fight much more intensely and for longer,” Kirby said. It remains to be seen whether Russia will have military success with this. However, the Ukrainians would defend themselves bravely, he assured.
Arms deliveries to Ukraine
The ongoing military threat to Ukraine is also why the US is doing everything it can to accelerate and expand the delivery of security support to Ukraine. The press spokesman explained that it currently only takes four to six days between the signing of the necessary documents by US President Joe Biden and the delivery of the supplies to Ukraine.
Another 750 million dollars in military aid?
According to an insider, the US will announce that it will provide an additional $750 million in military aid to Ukraine. This could potentially happen as early as Wednesday, two US officials familiar with the trial told Reuters news agency. One of the insiders said that the exact form of the aid is still under discussion.
