Fatal traffic accident Thursday afternoon in the Tyrolean Lech Valley: A German driver (74) entered the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the car of a local population. Her husband was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by emergency services. The German’s car caught fire. All three people were injured, some seriously.
The devastating accident happened around 3.45 pm on Lechtalstraße near Elmen. For reasons still unclear, the 74-year-old German suddenly ended up in the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the local couple’s car. The force of the impact threw both vehicles off the road.
The German’s car caught fire in the engine compartment. Pedestrians were able to extinguish the fire with a hand extinguisher, police said. They were also the first responders who alerted the emergency services. The three occupants of the car were injured in the head-on collision, some seriously.
Passenger trapped in the car
Passers-by were able to free the 74-year-old German and the driver, the 66-year-old husband of the woman was trapped in the wreckage and was eventually freed from the car by the fire service. The two men were flown in emergency helicopters to the Innsbruck clinic and the Reutte district hospital. The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.
In addition to the Elmen and Häselgehr fire brigades, there were five vehicles and about 25 firefighters, the road maintenance department, the rescue service with four vehicles, several police patrols and two rescue helicopters. Significant material damage was caused to both vehicles. The B198 was closed for two hours during the rescue or only one lane was drivable.
