The American Will Gordon, 205 in the PGA ranking, surprised this Thursday by leading the first round of the Mexican Mayakoba tournament with a card of 62 strokes, just under par, to take first place in the classification.
Gordon, who was not among the early favorites to win the contest that distributes a purse of 8.2 million dollars, signed eight ‘birdies’, a ‘bogey’ and an ‘eagle’ on the first day.
The main favorite to take Mayakoba, the American Scottie Scheffler, world number two, finished in seventh place with a 65 shot, six under parthe same position as the defending champion, Norwegian Viktor Hovland.
In 2007, the Mayakoba tournament was the first on the PGA tour to be played outside of the United States and Canada. The competition takes place at the ‘El chameleon’ club in the Riviera Maya, in the Mexican Caribbean.
