The president’s chief of staff appoints Lula’s ‘number two’ to special government transition position

After several days of silence, Brazil’s outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro is beginning to take steps in the transition of government after his rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, defeated him in the polls last Sunday. He called Geraldo Alckmin, Lula’s elected vice president, to a meeting and promised him cooperation between the outgoing and incoming governments. But it didn’t stop there.

The president’s chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, this Friday appointed the left-wing leader’s “number two” as a special government transition position, beginning a process that will formally conclude on January 1 with the transfer of the presidential sash in the South American giant.

In recent days, Nogueira has taken over the coordination of this process, which started yesterday morning with the publication of the nomination of the elected vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, in the Official Gazette of the Union. “We are going to work on the transition for a better future for all,” Lula wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s highways today were virtually free of blockades by truck drivers protesting Lula’s victory. According to the police, there are still 15 partial closures.
