This week, 120,000 doses of Biontech/Pfizer’s baby vaccine were delivered in Austria. It is the original, monovalent vaccine in a dose of three micrograms, the Ministry of Health announced Friday. The vaccines will be delivered to the federal states from Monday and will then be available in the vaccination centers. Three partial vaccinations are required.
The vaccine for young children has a significantly lower dose than the vaccine for children over five years of age at a dose of ten micrograms and the vaccine for children over twelve years of age, adolescents and adults at 30 micrograms.
Special vaccine formulation in individual vials
To ensure the correct extra-low dose, a special vaccine formulation is available for infants in separate vials with a brown cap. These are only allowed for children from the age of 6 months to the age of 5 years. Three vaccinations are given in this age group: The second vaccination is given 21 days after the first vaccination. The third vaccination should not be given earlier than eight weeks after the second vaccination.
Increased risk of severe course
It was not until the end of October that the National Vaccination Commission (NIG) issued a recommendation to vaccinate children between the ages of six months and five years at an increased risk of a severe course of Covid-19. In accordance with the approval, healthy children can also be offered vaccinations in this age group without increased risk, taking into account the personal situation and the individual environment. From the age of 5, a general advice applies for vaccination against Covid-19.
