The corona vaccination helps contain the pandemic. Yet it causes social polarization.
Opinions on the Covid vaccination vary widely. Scientists from Austria and Germany proved this in a study published this week in the journal “Nature Human Behavior”. In most cases, people who identify strongly with their vaccination status have little understanding of the other side. In particular, the mandatory vaccination, which had been proclaimed but not carried out, increased the division in society.
Emotional reasoning should be avoided
Also part of the research was an experiment in which the participants divided 100 euros between themselves and another. “Both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated put people with a different vaccination status at a disadvantage, and the more they identified with the vaccination status,” says psychologist Robert Böhm of the University of Vienna.
Common goals, such as ending the pandemic, can help close this gap. Emotional arguments should be avoided in campaigns to increase vaccine readiness. It would make more sense to emphasize vaccination as a simple measure to reduce health risks.
