The non-university public education in the Basque Country will face the first of the next Wednesday two days strike subpoenaed by ELA, LAB and Steilas in rejection of the draft of the preliminary bill of the future education bill, also called Ikasle Sindikatua.
Thousands of students and families will be hit by a strike that has threatened the Minister of Education, Jokin Bildarratzdays ago described as “pre-emptive”, as the bill is still pending and the final text is still unknown.
Before the new rules were approved, unions began mobilizing and calling for support for a second day of public school strikes next week. December 14 so that the Basque government meets their demands and they are reflected in the future law.
ALS, LAB and Steilaswho form the majority in the sector defend a “public, Basque and their own” school and reject the proposed bill, as its content “far from overcoming, but preserving the current dual education model”.
To overcome this, they demand that the future law has the public school at its center, that it prohibits coordinated centers from charging fees, that it guarantees that the competence to determine the Basque curriculum belongs to the Basque Country and that it establishes a learning model based, among other things, on immersion in Basque.
If their demands are not met, they have already warned of new protests during the consideration of the future law in the Basque parliament.
Ikasle Sindikatua He has also announced a strike. “Euskal Herria. November 30. General student strike together with our teachers” is the message that can be read on his web page.
As he explains, he calls the protest in defense of the Basque public school and against “the new privatization law that the PNV intends to pass”.
According to him, the new law presupposes “to give even more public resources to the employers of the subsidized private sector and the Catholic Church”, which has the effect of “greater school segregation”, and moreover “does not increase linguistic immersion either in Basque ‘, among other criticisms of the text.
ELA, LAB and Steilas as well as the Student Union will take to the streets this Wednesday with their demands through various mobilizations they have called in the three capitals of the CAV.
“Incomprehension” of the Basque government
The Basque government this Tuesday expressed its “misunderstanding” about the announced two-day strike and finds it “very difficult to understand” the real reasons for these strikes. The Executive has established a number of them minimum service.
Executive spokesperson Bingen Zupiriain the press conference after the Board of Directors, recalled the calling unions that it is not understandable that they are organizing these strikes on the grounds of rejecting the educational design when it has not even been approved by the Basque government and has not yet reached Parliament.
