When he quickly wanted to provide proof of his upcoming retirement, Michael H. (63), from Burgenland, was amazed. He was told he was already dead. The story of a more than strange confusion.
When the first door of the Advent calendar opens, it is also a special day for Michael H. After decades of hard work, the 63-year-old can finally start his well-deserved retirement. But the Burgenlander from Oberpetersdorf cannot really look forward to retirement yet.
Actually the neighbor had died
Reason: bureaucratic hassle – and these are hard to beat in terms of curiosity. According to Michael H. in the “Krone” interview, his neighbor, who lived at door number 9, unfortunately passed away recently. What initially had little to do with Michael H.’s official business quickly grew into a confusion in a class of its own.
The computer screen was a big shock
In order to have the year that H. worked in Germany count towards his upcoming pension, the Burgenland resident recently took out insurance. He was carrying proof of his work abroad – a bureaucratic triviality, you might think. But on site things turned out differently than expected. An employee showed H. the screen. It said in bold: Died!
“Every death must be confirmed by a doctor”
H. is still surprised today about who was responsible for the fake note: “It was the postman who let me die!” A doctor must confirm every death, H. obviously has no criticism of him. The confusion between door 9 of the actually deceased neighbor and 9A, behind which H. lives, may have led to the strange death letter.
Officially, Burgenländer is still dead
According to an email obtained by the “Krone,” the post office apologized for the “inconvenience.” The matter will be resolved soon. So far, according to Michael H., nothing has happened. In addition, the person who is still working does not receive important letters and cannot apply for his permanent pension. “I’m still officially dead,” he notes. And he doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry about it.
