Iran’s government has admitted to supplying Russia with drones for the first time. However, that was before the start of the war in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian said on Saturday.
The Islamic Republic made a limited number of drones available at the time, state news agency IRNA reports. However, after the outbreak of the war, Iran did not supply any drones or other weapons to Russia, according to the foreign minister.
Iranian soldiers in Crimea?
The Ukrainian and US governments have repeatedly denounced the use of Iranian kamikaze drones in the war. According to reports, Tehran has also sent military personnel to the occupied Crimean peninsula to train the Russian army in the use of the drones.
According to the Ukrainian army, the “limited number of drones” could be 2,400. According to the soldiers, they have already shot down hundreds of Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones. Iran’s foreign minister said a week ago that he wanted to talk to the Ukrainian government about the allegations.
Iran is known for its good relations with the Russian government. In order to neutralize Western sanctions, Tehran is calling on China and Russia in particular for economic and military cooperation.
