Tragedy in Southern Italy – Tourists and doctor die in helicopter crash

Date:

A helicopter with seven people on board crashed in the southern Italian Adriatic region of Apulia on Saturday. Two Italian crew members, a Slovenian tourist family of four and an Italian doctor were killed, authorities said on Saturday. Particularly tragic: the doctor just wanted to go home after work.

The helicopter of the airline Alidaunia, which had taken off from the Tremiti Islands in Apulia towards the Adriatic city of Foggia, disappeared from radar around 10:30 am, reportedly disappeared from radar.

The A109 – a helicopter used in civil and military aviation – was spotted in an agricultural area.

Popular holiday destination
At the time of the disappearance, a thunderstorm was raging at the accident site, and 40 Italian armed forces participated in the search for the helicopter. The Tremiti Islands in the southern Adriatic Sea are a popular holiday destination.

The family from Ljubljana had arrived in Tremiti the day before and should have returned to Foggia in the evening, but due to bad weather, the trip was postponed until Saturday, Italian media reported.

community in shock
The doctor of the crashed helicopter was working on the islands and wanted to fly home after his shift.

“The doctor had just finished his work and to return home, he decided to take the helicopter instead of the ship because of the bad weather conditions at sea. Dense fog has fallen here,” the mayor of the archipelago, Peppino Calabrese, told ANSA news agency. “Our community is in shock. This has never happened in 30 years of service,” he concluded.
