Migrants and refugees have gone on hunger strike on the German rescue ship Humanity 1. As Petra Krischok of the organization SOS Humanity told the German news agency on Tuesday, about 30 of the 35 men who were ordered by the authorities to take the ship in the port of Catania not allowed to leave Sicily, join the protest.
They told the crew that they had not eaten for 40 hours and that they wanted to let the public know. Rescuers will provide more details at a press conference on Wednesday.
Only women and children were allowed on board
Humanity 1 entered the port of Catania last weekend. But then Italy only allowed women, children and minors, as well as those men who were in an emergency situation, to leave the ship.
According to instructions from the Interior Ministry in Rome, the other men should be returned to international waters by ship. SOS Humanity rejects this. The German federation has now appealed to two courts to ensure that the 35 remaining can also be allowed ashore.
