Rarely have the so-called midterm elections, the mid-term congressional elections of an American president, been so politically charged as this time. High inflation, fuel prices and abortion rights are the focal points.
The vote, in which all 435 members of the United States House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 senators are re-elected, was styled in a fight between two not-so-young gentlemen whose names weren’t even on the ballots — between incumbent 46th US President Joe Biden. (79) and his predecessor and future successor Donald Trump (76).
Abortion ban is polarizing in the US
The elections are decided by important segments of the population, women, blacks, the increasingly important Latinos and young people. The degree of mobilization in these electoral groups determines the election. In the case of women and boys, Joe Biden’s Democrats primarily supported the right to abortion, which was overturned by the Supreme Court. Hardly any other topic is polarizing in the US anymore.
High inflation worries people the most
By far the most important themes in the election campaign, however, were high inflation, constantly rising fuel prices, fears of a recession and increasingly expensive lending rates. Two years ago, inflation had risen to 7 percent, after staying below 2 percent for the past ten years. Inflation is currently at 8.2 percent, the highest level in about 40 years.
According to a survey by the statistics platform “Fivethirtyeight” and the market research institute Ipsos, 65 percent of voters are most concerned about rising prices, followed by political polarization and increasing crime and gun violence.
