US midterm elections – Clear victory for Trump rival, trembling in Congress

Date:

Not only in the US, but also worldwide, many people are looking to the midterm elections, which include the decision of President Joe Biden’s future. Polling stations are now closed in most states. Now the trembling and waiting begins. There is as yet no sign of a provisional decision in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. As ex-President Donald Trump again suspected electoral fraud and called for protests, dozens of Republican candidates entered Congress openly questioning the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Also resolved: Trump rival Ron DeSantis has won the Florida gubernatorial election.

DeSantis is considered ex-President Donald Trump’s biggest Republican competitor. The previous incumbent, popular in Florida — who was elected governor by a narrow margin in 2018 — was always well ahead of his Democratic opponent Charlie Crist in polls. Florida is considered a so-called swing state in which voters sometimes prefer the Republicans and sometimes the Democrats.

US media has so far declared the race for Senate seats in 19 states closed. Accordingly, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and South Carolina would have remained in Republican hands, while Democrats would have left Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New York and could hold Vermont. In the midterm elections, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for grabs. The Republicans would need to win a seat from the Democrats to maintain a majority in the Senate in the future.

Forecast sees Republican majority in House of Representatives
According to Edison Research, Republicans have now won four seats from President Joe Biden’s Democrats in the House of Representatives. The polling institute reports that 242 of the 435 results in the congress room are still pending. So far, Democrats’ lead in the House of Representatives is just eight seats. In general, US media observers estimated their first estimate to be between 10 and 20 seats. If Biden’s Democrats lose their majority in Congress, it would severely limit the president’s political leeway. A winner could be determined on election night. According to analysts at the New York Times, the chance of a Republican majority in the House of Representatives is currently around 73 percent.

U.S. election authorities have reported only isolated incidents so far. A bomb threat was received in Louisiana and paper ran out in a Pennsylvania district. After problems with voting machines in Maricopa County, Arizona, Republicans are calling for polling stations to remain open longer. A judge denied that request.

The end result can be delayed for weeks
Several Senate races in states like Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Georgia are extremely close. It can take days — and even a month in Georgia with a runoff rule — for the results to be known. On Tuesday, the governors of 36 of the 50 US states were also elected. Because the United States spans multiple time zones, the elections are dragging on for a very long time: polls are open until 06:00 CET in large parts of Alaska and Hawaii.
