A general strike started in Belgium on Wednesday evening. Airports, train traffic and hospitals are particularly affected. According to the Belgian railways, only every fourth train should run. More than half of the flights were canceled at Brussels Airport.
There are no scheduled flights at Charleroi Airport, 50 kilometers south of the capital. A flight from Vienna to Charleroi is also cancelled. Three other flights from Vienna, which go directly to the airport of the Belgian capital, are planned. In addition, there are significantly fewer buses, trams and metros in Belgium than on normal weekdays. In this way, the unions want to obtain further measures against the increased cost of living and energy costs and put political pressure on them.
Due to critical working conditions, there is also a strike in many hospitals in the Brussels and Wallonia region. However, emergency care for patients is guaranteed, it said.
