The wrong-way driver accident on Saturday on the A1 Westautobahn in Upper Austria, in which the car of a Tyrolean was touched, has been clarified: the wrong-way driver (66) he was looking for went to the police himself – apparently assuming that the other drivers were wrong, but he indicated at the first interrogation that he had collided with a wrong-way driver.
The wrong-way driver was in the right lane on Saturday afternoon around 5.30 pm on the western motorway between Regau and Schörfling (Vöcklabruck district) and therefore drove in the wrong direction over the fast lane. A 35-year-old Tyrolean driving towards Salzburg managed to avoid a head-on collision by turning to the right to avoid the oncoming Audi.
However, the two vehicles collided sideways and the collision left parts of the wrong-way driver’s car on the road. The ghost driver then drove on.
Wrong driver was wrong
The next morning, the suspected wrong-way driver (66) reported independently to the police in Obertrum (Salzburg). During the first interrogation, he stated that he himself had collided with a wrong-way driver. After long questioning, it turned out to be the wrong-way driver they were looking for.
Driver’s license removed
The car parts found at the accident scene can clearly be assigned to his damaged car, police said. The 66-year-old has lost his driver’s license for the time being and reports have also been made to the public prosecutor’s office in Wels and the Vöcklabruck district.
