Drama in Berlin’s Bellevue Palace, seat of the German Federal President: Former GDR civil rights activist and later Green Party politician Werner Schulz collapsed and died during an event on Wednesday. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced this, according to conference participants. Schulz was 72 years old.
The Federal President’s Office ended the event early on November 9, citing the death of one of the participants as the reason. It wanted to inform the next of kin immediately.
Failed CPR
According to information from the German news agency, Schulz collapsed on the sidelines of the conference. The chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, who is a doctor, tried to resuscitate the green politician. However, this didn’t work.
It had previously been noted that Schuster left the Great Hall at Bellevue Palace immediately before his scheduled speech — because of an “emergency,” as the conference moderator said.
