Exciting minutes on Wednesday evening in the Vienna Dorotheum: a photo of the Madonna by Bellini brought in millions. The painting “Madonna with child” by Giovanni Bellini and assistant, which was valued at 250,000 to 350,000 euros, fetched a purchase price of 1,402,500 euros (including buyer’s fee and VAT) at the “Old Masters” auction.
According to the auction house, a telephone bidder has secured the painting Madonna and Child, with subtle colors and light tones, after a dramatic skirmish with a bidder who was present in the room.

This work, coming from a prestigious provenance, is an example of Giovanni Bellini’s realistic and natural style. “The great interest from museums, art foundations and renowned institutions across the entire Dorotheum range confirms the quality of this auction,” Old Masters expert Mark MacDonnell summed up in a broadcast.
