Threat to Climate Goals – Warning: Too Much Liquefied Gas Infrastructure Planned

Date:

In the current energy crisis, countries around the world are building a lot of liquefied gas infrastructure. According to researchers, more is already being built than is actually necessary. This jeopardizes the goal of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees if possible.

According to data from the Climate Action Tracker, there could be 500 megatons of LPG worldwide by 2030. That is almost five times the amount of Russian gas the EU imported in 2021. In addition, it is twice the amount of gas that Russia currently sells worldwide.

The run on liquefied gas is noticeable in Europe, as well as in North America, Asia, Africa and Australia, says Bill Hare, head of the partner organization Climate Analytics. If all currently planned projects were implemented, it would push emissions of climate-damaging gases such as CO₂ and methane to dangerous levels. This, in turn, jeopardizes the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial times.

Further temperature rise feared
The research team assumes that the earth will warm by about 2.4 degrees by the end of the century. That is the same value as calculated at the climate conference last year. If we look only at what governments are doing now, not what they have announced, the planet will warm by a staggering 2.7 degrees by 2100. The new analysis was presented Thursday at the global climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assumes that emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases should be halved by 2030. In this way, the target of 1.5 degrees could still be achieved.
